WEBSITE REDESIGN CHECKLIST

A website redesign should not begin with 'what should the new homepage look like?' It should begin with 'what value does the current website already contain, what is actually failing, and what must survive the change?' Before Creative Agency X changes navigation, URLs, content, CMS, forms or integrations, we want a baseline of rankings, traffic, leads, important pages, backlinks, analytics, content, technical dependencies and business-critical journeys. This checklist helps you decide whether you need a light refresh, a proper redesign or a full rebuild — and shows the current 2026 Australian and Perth pricing behind each level of work.

THE SHORT ANSWER

DO NOT REDESIGN A WEBSITE UNTIL YOU KNOW WHAT THE CURRENT SITE IS ALREADY DOING FOR YOU.

Inventory the current URLs, rankings, organic landing pages, backlinks, leads, forms, analytics, top content, conversion journeys, CMS, integrations and technical problems first. Then decide what should be retained, improved, consolidated, redirected or removed. If the platform and structure are healthy, a visual refresh may be enough. If the customer journey, content architecture or CMS is wrong, a redesign or rebuild is usually more efficient than repeatedly patching the old site.

KEEP

Pages that rank, convert, attract backlinks, support sales or contain useful proof should not disappear just because the new sitemap looks cleaner.

IMPROVE

Pages with useful intent but weak message, mobile UX, proof, accessibility or conversion can often be upgraded rather than replaced.

CONSOLIDATE

Duplicated or cannibalising pages may belong in one stronger destination, with redirects and internal-link updates.

REMOVE

Delete only when the page has no meaningful customer, search, backlink, campaign or operational value — and handle the URL intentionally.

OUR REDESIGN JOB IS NOT TO ERASE THE OLD WEBSITE. IT IS TO KEEP THE VALUE, REMOVE THE FRICTION AND REBUILD ONLY WHAT THE BUSINESS HAS OUTGROWN.

REFRESH, REDESIGN OR REBUILD?

THE CORRECT LEVEL OF CHANGE DEPENDS ON WHAT IS BROKEN UNDER THE VISUAL LAYER.

Choosing the wrong redesign model is one of the fastest ways to either overspend or carry old problems into a new look.

  1. 01 THE WEBSITE WORKS WELL BUT LOOKS DATED.

Keep the platform, URLs and major structure. Refresh visual design, typography, imagery and selected layouts instead of funding a full rebuild.

    READ WEB DESIGN BEST PRACTICES
  2. 02 THE BRAND / OFFER HAS CHANGED AND THE STRUCTURE NO LONGER FITS.

Use a full redesign: rework information architecture, page hierarchy, content and conversion while preserving valuable search equity.

    VIEW WEB DEVELOPMENT
  3. 03 THE CMS / CODEBASE IS THE PROBLEM.

A rebuild or replatform may be cheaper over time than designing new screens on a platform that remains slow, fragile or hard to edit.

    VIEW WEB DEVELOPMENT
  4. 04 ORGANIC TRAFFIC IS IMPORTANT.

Make SEO migration a first-class workstream: inventory ranking URLs, map redirects, preserve useful content, maintain internal-link relationships and monitor post-launch changes.

    VIEW TECHNICAL SEO
  5. 05 THE WEBSITE GETS TRAFFIC BUT DOES NOT CONVERT.

Use analytics, user behaviour and CRO evidence to identify what the redesign should actually fix before replacing every section.

    VIEW CRO PERTH
  6. 06 THE SITE IS ECOMMERCE / TRANSACTIONAL.

Treat product data, catalogue URLs, checkout, payment, shipping, accounts and integrations as migration-critical systems — not just content to copy into a new theme.

THE REDESIGN PRESERVATION FRAMEWORK

BASELINE → INVENTORY → DECIDE → DESIGN → MIGRATE → VERIFY.

Creative Agency X uses the redesign as both an improvement project and a controlled migration.

01 REDESIGN REASON

Define the measurable problem: dated positioning, poor conversion, weak mobile UX, hard editing, slow performance, SEO limits or functionality gaps.

WHAT MUST BE BETTER AFTER LAUNCH?
02 PERFORMANCE BASELINE

Record traffic, organic landing pages, leads, sales, conversion events, ranking pages and important technical metrics before changing anything.

WHAT NUMBER / BEHAVIOUR ARE WE TRYING NOT TO LOSE?
03 URL / SEARCH INVENTORY

Export current URLs, rankings, backlinks, canonical/indexing behaviour and internal links so every important path has a migration decision.

WHICH URLS HAVE EARNED VALUE?
04 CONTENT INVENTORY

Mark every useful service, project, article, product, location, team, media and proof asset as keep, improve, merge or retire.

WHICH CONTENT STILL HELPS A CUSTOMER OR SEARCH ENGINE?
05 CONVERSION JOURNEYS

Document calls, forms, bookings, purchases, downloads, CRM handoffs and tracking before redesigning the path.

WHAT MUST STILL WORK ON DAY ONE?
06 DESIGN / CONTENT SYSTEM

Create reusable templates/components around real content and editing needs rather than designing disconnected mockups.

CAN THE NEW SYSTEM SCALE AFTER LAUNCH?
07 TECH / INTEGRATIONS

Map hosting, CMS, forms, CRM, ecommerce, booking, APIs, scripts, analytics and third-party dependencies before cutover.

WHICH SYSTEM BREAKS IF WE MISS A CONNECTION?
08 LAUNCH / MONITORING

Crawl, test redirects, verify analytics/forms, inspect indexing and monitor high-value pages after launch instead of treating go-live as the finish line.

HOW DO WE PROVE THE MIGRATION WORKED?

REDESIGN MODEL

A RESKIN, REDESIGN AND REBUILD ARE DIFFERENT PROJECTS EVEN IF THE CUSTOMER CALLS ALL THREE A REDESIGN.

Make this distinction before collecting quotes because it changes strategy, migration risk, development effort and price.

REDESIGN MODEL GOOD FIT WATCH FOR ASK BEFORE YOU BUY
VISUAL REFRESH / RESKIN Platform, information architecture, URLs and functionality are healthy; brand presentation is the main problem. Using a cosmetic refresh to avoid fixing structural content, mobile, performance or conversion problems. WHAT ARE WE DELIBERATELY NOT CHANGING?
SAME-PLATFORM FULL REDESIGN CMS is viable but navigation, content, templates and customer journey need meaningful change. Major URL/content changes being made without migration ownership because the platform stayed the same. WHO OWNS CONTENT + SEO MIGRATION?
REBUILD / REPLATFORM Old CMS/code, editing, performance or integrations create structural constraints that design alone cannot fix. Rebuilding everything without evidence that the current technology is actually the bottleneck. WHAT PROBLEM DOES THE NEW PLATFORM SOLVE?
ECOMMERCE / COMPLEX REDESIGN Catalogue, checkout, accounts, integration or application logic makes the website business-critical. Treating product/data/system migration like ordinary page-copy migration. WHAT IS THE DATA + FUNCTIONAL MIGRATION PLAN?

WEBSITE REDESIGN PRICING / 2026

PRICE THE LEVEL OF CHANGE AND THE MIGRATION RISK — NOT THE WORD 'REDESIGN'.

Current Australian redesign pricing spans light visual refreshes through SEO-safe rebuilds and ecommerce migrations. The Creative Agency X planning range is calculated at 60% of the comparable market band. Where a row is a broader planning band rather than one publisher's exact product, the boundary states that clearly.

AUD MARKET × 0.60 = CAX (40% LOWER) REVIEWED 2026-08-27
SCOPE / PROGRAMME WHAT THIS BUYS MARKET BENCHMARK CREATIVE AGENCY X BILLING BEST FIT
REDESIGN / UX AUDIT + ROADMAP Focused planning band inside current Australian UX-audit market, which begins around A$2K and scales much higher for complex products. Analytics/heuristic review, current-site issues, journey findings and prioritised redesign recommendations before design. A$2K–A$5K A$1,200–A$3K ONE-OFF PROJECT Businesses that are not yet sure whether they need a refresh, redesign or rebuild.
VISUAL REFRESH / RESKIN Current 2026 Australian reskin/refresh references. New visual direction, typography, imagery and selected layout updates while preserving platform and core information architecture. A$1,500–A$4K A$900–A$2,400 ONE-OFF PROJECT Healthy websites whose main problem is presentation rather than structure.
FULL SMALL-BUSINESS REDESIGN Current 2026 Australian full-redesign market. New design system, improved page structure, content migration/rework, responsive build and launch QA. A$3K–A$10K A$1,800–A$6K ONE-OFF PROJECT SMBs needing new content/customer architecture while keeping complexity moderate.
SEO-SAFE REDESIGN + MIGRATION Current Perth published redesign + SEO-safe migration band. Full redesign plus URL inventory, redirects, SEO/content migration, crawl QA and post-launch organic monitoring. A$10K–A$25K A$6K–A$15K ONE-OFF PROJECT Established websites where rankings, backlinks and organic leads materially matter.
REBUILD / REPLATFORM Current Australian 2026 rebuild/replatform references commonly run A$8K–25K+. New CMS/framework, design/build, content/URL migration and deeper technical replacement. A$8K–A$25K A$4,800–A$15K ONE-OFF PROJECT Sites whose current platform, codebase or editing model is a structural constraint.
ECOMMERCE REDESIGN Current Australian ecommerce-redesign benchmark; complex stores can exceed the band. Storefront redesign plus catalogue/product migration, checkout, payment/shipping, SEO and commerce QA. A$8K–A$25K A$4,800–A$15K ONE-OFF PROJECT Existing stores where transaction and product migration risk must be managed.
INTEGRATED / LARGER REDESIGN Uses the current Perth integrated/larger website market as the comparable redesign planning band. Larger content architecture with CRM, booking, member, API or other integration requirements. A$15K–A$40K A$9K–A$24K ONE-OFF PROJECT Businesses where the redesigned site also changes operational systems or customer workflows.
MULTI-STAKEHOLDER / ENTERPRISE REDESIGN Planning band aligned with current Perth mid-size agency project pricing; highly complex enterprise redesigns can exceed A$60K. Complex discovery, governance, accessibility, content migration, integrations, QA and staged stakeholder approvals. A$25K–A$60K A$15K–A$36K ONE-OFF / PHASED PROJECT Large organisations where redesign complexity is driven by governance and breadth, not just page count.

Creative Agency X planning price = comparable market × 0.60. Example: A$10,000–25,000 SEO-safe redesign → A$6,000–15,000 CAX.

Redesign pricing excludes third-party software, licences, hosting, paid photography/video and external platform fees unless explicitly included in the scope.

A redesign is not automatically cheaper than a new website. If the current code/content system cannot be reused safely, migration adds work rather than removing it.

THE REDESIGN CHECKLIST

DO NOT APPROVE THE NEW SITEMAP UNTIL THESE TWELVE ITEMS HAVE AN OWNER.

This is the minimum information Creative Agency X wants before replacing an established website.

01 CURRENT URL INVENTORY

Export all indexable URLs, important landing pages and content before planning the new structure.

02 RANKINGS / SEARCH CONSOLE BASELINE

Record valuable queries, clicks, impressions and landing pages before changing URLs/content.

03 BACKLINKED PAGES

Identify URLs with external links so they are retained or redirected intentionally.

04 ANALYTICS / CONVERSION BASELINE

Know current forms, calls, purchases, bookings and high-value journeys before redesigning them.

05 CONTENT KEEP / IMPROVE / MERGE / REMOVE

Give every important content item a migration decision instead of blindly copying or deleting everything.

06 REDIRECT MAP

Every retired or changed valuable URL should map to the closest relevant destination — not automatically the homepage.

07 FORMS / CRM / BOOKING

Document fields, routing, notifications, CRM mapping and tracking before rebuilding forms.

08 THIRD-PARTY SCRIPTS / INTEGRATIONS

Inventory chat, analytics, pixels, APIs, payments, maps, feeds and embedded systems.

09 CMS / EDITOR REQUIREMENTS

Define what the team needs to update after launch so the new system does not recreate current editing problems.

10 MOBILE / ACCESSIBILITY / PERFORMANCE BASELINE

Document current issues so redesign acceptance criteria include more than visual approval.

11 PRE-LAUNCH CRAWL + FUNCTIONAL QA

Test redirects, metadata, forms, links, navigation, devices, tracking and integrations before DNS/cutover.

12 POST-LAUNCH MONITORING

Monitor Search Console, analytics, forms, errors, redirects and important landing pages for the first weeks after launch.

REDESIGN FAILURE POINTS

THE BIGGEST REDESIGN LOSSES ARE OFTEN INVISIBLE ON LAUNCH DAY.

A site can look dramatically better while quietly losing organic traffic, leads, tracking or operational reliability.

  1. 01 STARTING WITH VISUAL CONCEPTS BEFORE AUDITING THE CURRENT SITE

You cannot protect value you never measured.

  2. 02 CHANGING URLS BECAUSE THE NEW SLUGS LOOK CLEANER

Change a ranking URL only when the benefit justifies migration risk and the redirect/content plan is clear.

  3. 03 DELETING 'OLD' CONTENT WITHOUT CHECKING TRAFFIC / LINKS

Unfashionable pages can still attract search demand, backlinks or sales-support traffic.

  4. 04 COPYING ALL OLD CONTENT WITHOUT QUESTION

A redesign is also an opportunity to remove duplication, fix weak intent and improve commercial content.

  5. 05 LEAVING SEO UNTIL AFTER DESIGN APPROVAL

Search intent and URL architecture influence the sitemap; they cannot safely be bolted on at the end.

  6. 06 TESTING ONLY THE HOMEPAGE

Real failure often appears in forms, checkout, mobile menus, old redirects, tracking or integration edge cases.

  7. 07 LAUNCHING WITHOUT AN ANALYTICS BASELINE

Without before/after data, you cannot distinguish redesign impact from normal seasonality or campaign changes.

  8. 08 ENDING THE PROJECT AT GO-LIVE

Organic/indexing and technical problems can appear days or weeks after launch; monitoring is part of migration.

REDESIGN ACTION PLAN

PRESERVE FIRST. IMPROVE SECOND. REBUILD ONLY WHERE THE OLD SYSTEM IS HOLDING YOU BACK.

Use this sequence to keep the redesign commercially controlled.

  1. 01 AUDIT CURRENT PERFORMANCE

Capture traffic, rankings, conversion, content and technical condition before design begins.

  2. 02 DECIDE REFRESH VS REDESIGN VS REBUILD

Choose the level of intervention based on structural problems rather than visual frustration alone.

  3. 03 MAP NEW ARCHITECTURE + MIGRATION TOGETHER

Every new page decision should immediately create a keep, merge, redirect or remove decision for the old site.

  4. 04 DESIGN AROUND REAL CONTENT / JOURNEYS

Use real services, proof, forms and content length so approval reflects the future website.

  5. 05 BUILD + QA BOTH NEW AND MIGRATED SYSTEMS

Validate functionality, accessibility, performance, tracking, redirects and integrations.

  6. 06 MONITOR AFTER LAUNCH

Watch organic landing pages, conversions, crawl/indexing and errors closely enough to correct migration issues early.

WEBSITE REDESIGN / PERTH CONTEXT

PERTH REDESIGNS OFTEN NEED TO PROTECT BOTH LOCAL DEMAND AND BROADER WA / NATIONAL B2B VALUE.

A Perth service business, resources contractor and national ecommerce brand may all need redesigns — but the migration risks are different.

LOCAL SERVICE PAGES

Do not collapse useful service/location intent just because the new design prefers fewer navigation items.

WA B2B / CAPABILITY CONTENT

Project, sector and capability pages may support procurement or sales even when they are not the highest-traffic URLs.

NATIONAL / ECOMMERCE SEARCH

A Perth operating location should not force nationally ranking product or solution pages into unnecessary local language during redesign.

NO INVENTED LOCAL CONTENT

A redesign is not a reason to add unsupported Perth office/address claims for SEO.

WEBSITE REDESIGN FAQ

THE QUESTIONS TO ANSWER BEFORE YOU REPLACE A WEBSITE THAT ALREADY HAS HISTORY.

The safer redesign is the one that treats existing value as an asset rather than clutter.

01 HOW MUCH DOES A WEBSITE REDESIGN COST IN AUSTRALIA IN 2026?

Current 2026 references put visual refreshes around A$1,500–4,000, full small-business redesigns around A$3,000–10,000, ecommerce redesigns around A$8,000–25,000 and rebuild/replatform projects around A$8,000–25,000+ depending on migration and complexity.

02 WHEN SHOULD I REDESIGN INSTEAD OF JUST REFRESHING THE WEBSITE?

Use a refresh when the platform, architecture, content and functionality are healthy and the main problem is visual. Use a redesign/rebuild when customer journeys, content structure, CMS, performance, functionality or integrations are structural constraints.

03 CAN A WEBSITE REDESIGN HURT SEO?

Yes. Removing ranking pages, changing URLs without redirects, weakening content/internal links, blocking indexing or breaking technical signals can reduce organic performance. SEO migration should be planned before the new sitemap is final.

04 SHOULD WE KEEP THE SAME URLS DURING A REDESIGN?

Keep valuable URLs when they still represent the right intent and structure. Change them only when there is a clear architectural reason, then map permanent redirects and update internal links intentionally.

05 SHOULD WE REWRITE ALL WEBSITE CONTENT?

Not automatically. Keep strong content, improve weak but useful pages, consolidate duplication and retire content with no meaningful customer/search value. Redesign should not erase good copy just to make everything sound new.

06 WHAT SHOULD BE MEASURED BEFORE REDESIGN?

At minimum: important URLs, organic landing pages, rankings/search queries, backlinks, leads/sales, conversion events, analytics, forms, mobile/performance issues and any business-critical integrations.

07 HOW LONG SHOULD WE MONITOR AFTER LAUNCH?

Functional monitoring starts immediately and continues as part of maintenance. For search migration, watch indexing, crawl errors, redirects, organic landing pages and major ranking/traffic changes closely during the first weeks and continue reviewing longer-term trends.

08 HOW WOULD CREATIVE AGENCY X HANDLE MY REDESIGN?

We begin with the current asset and the business problem, decide what should survive, map architecture and migration together, keep content/SEO/integration ownership visible, then test the redesigned site against the journeys and metrics that mattered before launch.
