SEO & DIGITAL MARKETING GLOSSARY

Agency proposals are much easier to judge when you know what the terminology commits the supplier to actually do. This glossary translates the SEO, paid media, analytics, conversion, website and marketing terms you are most likely to see in a Perth digital proposal into plain English, explains why each term matters commercially, and shows what common service terms usually cost in the 2026 Australian market. Use it to read a proposal intelligently — then ask us exactly what Creative Agency X will own.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A MARKETING TERM IS ONLY USEFUL IF YOU KNOW THE BUSINESS DECISION OR DELIVERABLE BEHIND IT.

SEO should describe how organic visibility will be improved. PPC management should describe who owns campaigns, tracking and optimisation — not the media spend itself. CRO should describe how conversion problems are researched and tested. Technical SEO should identify implementation work, not just an automated audit. 'Reporting' should tell you which business outcomes are being measured. When a proposal uses a term without defining the work, ask what will physically change on the website, campaign, tracking system or customer journey.

IF THE TERM DESCRIBES A CHANNEL

Ask how the channel creates demand, captures demand or nurtures existing leads — and what commercial action is expected from it.

IF THE TERM DESCRIBES A METRIC

Ask whether the metric is diagnostic or commercial. CTR can help diagnose an ad; revenue and qualified leads tell you whether the programme is useful.

IF THE TERM DESCRIBES A TECHNICAL TASK

Ask who implements it. A technical recommendation without an implementation owner can remain permanently stuck in an audit document.

IF THE TERM DESCRIBES A PRICE MODEL

Separate agency fee, media spend, third-party software and production so you know where the money actually goes.

CREATIVE AGENCY X WOULD RATHER EXPLAIN A TERM BEFORE YOU SIGN THAN USE JARGON TO MAKE A BASIC DELIVERABLE SOUND MORE COMPLEX.

HOW TO USE THIS GLOSSARY

START WITH THE PART OF THE PROPOSAL YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND.

The goal is not to memorise acronyms. It is to know what to ask before budget is committed.

  1. 01 I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT THE AGENCY IS ACTUALLY DELIVERING.

Translate the service term into concrete outputs, implementation ownership, recurring work and what will change month to month.

    VIEW ALL SERVICES
  2. 02 THE REPORT HAS LOTS OF METRICS BUT I CANNOT TELL WHETHER MARKETING IS WORKING.

Separate diagnostic metrics such as impressions, CTR and CPC from commercial measures such as qualified leads, purchases, pipeline and revenue.

    VIEW DIGITAL MARKETING
  3. 03 I CANNOT TELL WHETHER AD SPEND IS INCLUDED IN THE MANAGEMENT FEE.

Ask for agency management, platform media, creative production and software to be shown as separate budget lines.

    VIEW PPC MANAGEMENT
  4. 04 THE SEO PROPOSAL MENTIONS TECHNICAL WORK, CONTENT AND LINKS BUT NOT WHO IMPLEMENTS THEM.

Ask which team changes the website, writes content, acquires authority and resolves development tickets.

    VIEW SEO PERTH
  5. 05 THE WEBSITE PROPOSAL USES TERMS LIKE CMS, API, CRM AND HEADLESS.

Ask which systems are genuinely required, what data moves between them and who owns support after launch.

PLAIN-ENGLISH TERM TABLE

THE TERMS YOU ARE MOST LIKELY TO SEE IN A WEBSITE, SEO OR DIGITAL MARKETING PROPOSAL.

Read the final column as the question we would want you to ask any agency — including Creative Agency X.

TERM PLAIN ENGLISH WHY IT MATTERS ASK BEFORE YOU BUY
SEO Improving unpaid visibility in search through technical, content, local and authority work. SEO is a programme, not a single task or guaranteed ranking position. WHAT WILL ACTUALLY CHANGE ON THE WEBSITE EACH MONTH?
SERP The search engine results page shown after someone searches. Results can include organic listings, ads, maps, images, snippets and other features. WHICH SERP FEATURE ARE WE TRYING TO WIN?
SEARCH INTENT The underlying job behind a query — buy, compare, find, learn or navigate. Keyword wording alone can hide different customer intentions. WHICH PAGE SHOULD SATISFY THIS INTENT?
CRAWL / INDEX Crawl = search engines accessing URLs. Index = eligible pages being stored/considered for results. A page can be crawlable but not indexed, or indexed but poorly relevant. IS ACCESS THE PROBLEM OR PAGE QUALITY / RELEVANCE?
CANONICAL A signal indicating which version of similar/duplicate URLs should be treated as primary. Canonical is not a magic duplicate-content fix if architecture is fundamentally messy. WHY DO THESE DUPLICATE URLS EXIST?
SCHEMA / STRUCTURED DATA Machine-readable markup describing entities/content such as products, organisations or breadcrumbs. Schema can improve understanding/eligibility but does not guarantee rich results or rankings. WHICH ELIGIBLE CONTENT ACTUALLY BENEFITS FROM THIS MARKUP?
GBP Google Business Profile — the business listing used across Google Maps and local search. Profile optimisation does not replace strong website/service/location relevance. IS THE BUSINESS DATA, CATEGORY AND LOCATION MODEL ACCURATE?
PPC Pay-per-click advertising where the advertiser pays for traffic/clicks or other auction-priced actions. The platform media budget is usually separate from the agency management fee. WHAT IS MANAGEMENT FEE VS MEDIA SPEND?
CPC / CPM / CPA CPC = cost per click. CPM = cost per thousand impressions. CPA = cost per acquisition/action. A cheap click or lead is not automatically a profitable customer. WHICH COST METRIC CONNECTS BEST TO BUSINESS VALUE?
CTR Click-through rate — the percentage of impressions that result in clicks. Useful for diagnosing message/relevance but not a complete business KPI. DO HIGHER CLICKS ALSO CREATE BETTER LEADS / SALES?
ROAS Return on ad spend — tracked revenue divided by advertising spend. ROAS can ignore margin, agency fee, returns and customer lifetime value. ARE WE LOOKING AT REVENUE OR PROFITABLE GROWTH?
CONVERSION RATE The percentage of visitors/users completing a defined desired action. The number changes dramatically depending on what counts as a conversion. WHICH ACTION ARE WE CALLING A CONVERSION?
CRO Conversion Rate Optimisation — research and testing aimed at improving valuable customer actions. CRO is more than changing button colours; it should investigate message, proof, friction and journey. WHAT EVIDENCE IS DRIVING THE CHANGE?
GA4 / GTM GA4 is Google Analytics 4. GTM is Google Tag Manager used to manage tracking tags/events. Installing tools does not mean conversion tracking is correctly configured. WHICH EVENTS ARE VERIFIED AGAINST REAL BUSINESS ACTIONS?
UTM PARAMETERS Tags added to URLs to identify campaign source, medium and campaign details in analytics. Inconsistent naming creates fragmented and unreliable reports. WHAT NAMING STANDARD DOES THE TEAM USE?
ATTRIBUTION The model/process used to assign credit for a lead or sale across marketing touchpoints. No attribution model perfectly captures every offline and cross-device interaction. WHICH DECISIONS WILL THIS ATTRIBUTION MODEL INFORM?
CMS Content Management System — software used to manage website content, such as WordPress. CMS choice affects editing, maintenance, performance and integration responsibility. WHO WILL UPDATE THE SITE AND WHAT CONTENT MUST THEY MANAGE?
API An interface allowing systems to exchange data or trigger actions programmatically. An API existing does not guarantee the integration is simple or reliable. WHAT DATA MOVES, WHICH SYSTEM IS SOURCE OF TRUTH AND HOW ARE FAILURES HANDLED?
CRM Customer Relationship Management system used to manage leads, contacts, pipeline and customer activity. A website form integration is only useful if sales data returns enough context for marketing decisions. HOW DOES LEAD SOURCE / CAMPAIGN CONTEXT ENTER THE CRM?
CORE WEB VITALS Google's user-experience performance metrics covering loading, responsiveness and layout stability. Performance is broader than a single score and can vary by device, page and real-user conditions. WHICH TEMPLATE / ASSET IS CAUSING THE REAL USER PROBLEM?

WHAT COMMON SERVICE TERMS COST

A 2026 AUSTRALIAN PRICE REFERENCE FOR THE SERVICE TERMS YOU SEE IN PROPOSALS.

This table is here to help you understand the commercial language in quotes. It does not imply that every business needs every service. Creative Agency X uses the same 40%-lower formula against the comparable market range, while media spend and third-party costs remain separate.

AUD MARKET × 0.60 = CAX (40% LOWER) REVIEWED 2026-08-26

WEBSITE DESIGN + BUILD Current Australian 2026 agency ranges span entry through mid-market; enterprise/custom software goes higher. Strategy, design and development for a professional business website. A$3K–A$25K A$1,800–A$15K ONE-OFF PROJECT Businesses buying or rebuilding the digital platform marketing depends on.

Creative Agency X fee = market benchmark × 0.60. Example: A$2,500–6,000 market SEO → A$1,500–3,600 CAX.

Media spend is money paid to Google, Meta, LinkedIn or another platform. It is not the same as the agency management fee and is not reduced by our 40% formula.

When comparing proposals, match scope before price. A line called 'SEO' or 'content marketing' can represent radically different workloads at different agencies.

PROPOSAL LANGUAGE CHECKLIST

BEFORE YOU SIGN, MAKE EVERY IMPORTANT TERM ANSWER A PRACTICAL QUESTION.

Use this list on any agency proposal — including ours.

01 DELIVERABLE

What will physically be created, changed, configured, published or optimised?

02 FREQUENCY

How often does the activity happen and what amount/volume is included?

03 IMPLEMENTATION OWNER

Who makes technical, content, campaign or tracking changes?

04 AGENCY FEE

What part of the monthly/project price is retained by the agency?

05 MEDIA SPEND

How much goes directly to advertising platforms?

06 THIRD-PARTY COST

Which hosting, apps, licences, data or software are external?

07 PRODUCTION

Is copy, design, video or photography included or separate?

08 MEASUREMENT

Which metrics are diagnostic and which represent business outcomes?

09 DATA ACCESS

Do you retain access/ownership of analytics, ad accounts, CMS, domain and CRM?

10 RESPONSE / SLA

If support is included, what response or availability is actually committed?

11 TERM / CANCELLATION

What happens to campaigns, assets, data and access when the engagement ends?

12 OUT-OF-SCOPE

Which common requests are explicitly not included so there are no surprises?

COMMON JARGON TRAPS

TECHNICAL LANGUAGE CAN HIDE A VERY SMALL DELIVERABLE.

These are the places where we want you to ask for specificity.

  1. 01 CALLING REPORTING A STRATEGY

A dashboard explains what happened. Strategy explains what should change and why.

  2. 02 CALLING AN AUTOMATED CRAWL AN SEO AUDIT

A crawl is useful evidence; an audit prioritises it against search intent, site architecture and business impact.

  3. 03 CALLING AD SPEND A MANAGEMENT FEE

Keep platform media and agency management transparent and separate.

  4. 04 CALLING TRAFFIC A CONVERSION

Traffic is an input. Enquiries, bookings, purchases or other meaningful actions are conversions.

  5. 05 CALLING EVERY WEBSITE 'CUSTOM'

Ask which parts are custom strategy, custom design, custom development or simply configured templates.

  6. 06 CALLING BULK LINKS 'AUTHORITY'

Link quantity does not describe relevance, credibility or risk.

  7. 07 CALLING SOFTWARE INSTALLATION 'IMPLEMENTATION'

Installing GA4, CRM or a plugin is not the same as configuring a reliable business workflow.

  8. 08 USING ACRONYMS TO AVOID COMMERCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY

If a term cannot be connected to a deliverable, decision or business outcome, ask why it is in the proposal.

HOW TO READ AN AGENCY PROPOSAL

TRANSLATE EVERY SECTION INTO WORK, COST, OWNER AND OUTCOME.

This is the fastest way to compare two proposals that use different terminology.

  1. 01 HIGHLIGHT THE SERVICE TERMS

SEO, PPC, CRO, content, hosting, maintenance, development, analytics and so on.

  2. 02 WRITE THE DELIVERABLE BESIDE EACH TERM

Pages, campaigns, fixes, reports, links, hours, tests or integrations.

  3. 03 SEPARATE BUDGET LAYERS

Agency fee, media, production, software, hosting and project extras.

  4. 04 MARK THE IMPLEMENTATION OWNER

Identify tasks the agency recommends but expects your team to execute.

  5. 05 CONNECT METRICS TO COMMERCIAL OUTCOMES

Make clear where clicks, traffic or visibility end and leads, sales or pipeline begin.

  6. 06 COMPARE LIKE WITH LIKE

Only compare price after both proposals describe a comparable amount and level of work.

GLOSSARY / PERTH CONTEXT

THE TERMINOLOGY IS GLOBAL. THE COMMERCIAL CONTEXT CAN STILL BE LOCAL.

Perth businesses may buy local SEO, WA B2B marketing, national ecommerce or broader digital services. Use the glossary to understand the scope without assuming every service should be geographically narrow.

LOCAL SEO TERMS

GBP, citations, local pack and NAP are most relevant where real location/service-area intent affects the customer.

B2B / WA MARKET

Pipeline, MQL/SQL, account-based marketing and CRM terms are often more useful than simple ecommerce-style metrics for complex sales.

NATIONAL DIGITAL SERVICES

A Perth-based business can still run national SEO, PPC or ecommerce programmes; geography does not define every campaign.

NO INVENTED LOCAL CLAIMS

Local marketing terminology should never be used to justify fake offices or unsupported location claims.

SEO & DIGITAL MARKETING GLOSSARY FAQ

QUESTIONS PEOPLE USUALLY ASK ONCE THEY START READING A REAL PROPOSAL.

The glossary is here to help you challenge vague scope without needing to become a marketer.

01 WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SEO AND PPC?

SEO aims to improve unpaid search visibility over time through technical, content, local and authority work. PPC buys advertising visibility through a platform auction. They can target similar search demand but have different cost and ownership models.

02 WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CPC, CPA AND ROAS?

CPC is cost per click. CPA is cost per defined acquisition or action. ROAS is tracked revenue divided by advertising spend. The most useful metric depends on whether the business can reliably connect campaigns to qualified leads, sales and profit.

03 WHAT DOES 'FULL-SERVICE DIGITAL MARKETING' ACTUALLY MEAN?

It normally means one supplier manages several channels plus strategy/reporting, but inclusions vary enormously. Ask which channels, how much production, which landing-page work, what tracking and which implementation are actually included.

04 IS MEDIA SPEND INCLUDED IN PPC MANAGEMENT?

Normally no. Media spend is paid to Google, Meta or another platform. Management is the agency fee for strategy, setup, optimisation and reporting. We keep those costs separate unless a proposal explicitly says otherwise.

05 WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CMS, CRM AND API?

A CMS manages website content, a CRM manages customer/lead data and pipeline, and an API is a way for systems to exchange data or actions. A website project may use all three, but they solve different problems.

06 WHAT IS TECHNICAL SEO?

Technical SEO covers website conditions affecting crawling, indexing, rendering, site architecture, performance and technical search signals. A technical audit finds issues; implementation actually changes the site.

07 WHAT DOES CRO MEAN?

Conversion Rate Optimisation is the structured improvement of actions such as enquiries, bookings or purchases through research, analytics, UX changes and testing. It is not simply changing button colours.

08 CAN CREATIVE AGENCY X REVIEW ANOTHER AGENCY'S PROPOSAL?

You can send us the scope and tell us what you want to understand. We can explain terminology, identify obvious scope differences and show how we would approach the same requirement without pretending we know details that are not written in their proposal.

HAVE A PROPOSAL FULL OF TERMS BUT STILL NOT SURE WHAT YOU ARE BUYING?

SEND US THE REQUIREMENT YOU ARE TRYING TO SOLVE — NOT JUST THE ACRONYM.

We will explain which Creative Agency X service owns the problem, what implementation should look like and which budget lines should remain separate so you can make a cleaner decision.
