KEYWORD MAPPING

Keyword mapping is where SEO stops being a spreadsheet of phrases and becomes a website plan. Creative Agency X maps each meaningful search intent to one primary page, decides where similar terms belong together, identifies when a new page is genuinely required, and prevents several URLs from competing for the same customer. For a Perth service business, that can mean separating service, location, industry and informational intent. For ecommerce, it means deciding which terms belong to categories, products, guides and filters. This guide shows how to build the map and what current 2026 Australian research, audit and consulting benchmarks imply for keyword-mapping project costs.

THE SHORT ANSWER

MAP SEARCH INTENT TO PAGES BEFORE YOU CREATE MORE PAGES.

Group keywords by what the searcher is trying to accomplish, inspect the live SERP to confirm whether Google treats those terms as the same or different intent, then assign each group to one primary URL. Keep variants and close synonyms together when the same page can satisfy them. Split intent only when the customer decision or SERP is materially different. Mark each URL as commercial, local, category, product, informational or support content, then use internal links to connect supporting pages into the primary commercial destination.

KEYWORD ≠ PAGE

Ten keyword variants do not automatically require ten pages. One strong page can own a cluster when the intent and SERP overlap.

SERP VALIDATION

If the same URLs repeatedly rank for two terms, they often belong on the same page. If the SERPs are materially different, separate ownership may be justified.

PAGE ROLE

A service page, location page, category page and guide may all mention similar language but serve different customer jobs.

MAP BEFORE CONTENT

A content brief is stronger when the writer already knows the page's primary intent, supporting terms, internal-link role and competing URLs to avoid.

WE WOULD RATHER TELL YOU THAT 80 KEYWORDS BELONG ON 12 STRONG PAGES THAN SELL YOU 80 THIN PAGES THAT COMPETE WITH EACH OTHER.

WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO MAP?

THE MAPPING METHOD CHANGES WITH THE WEBSITE MODEL.

Use the site's real buying structure rather than forcing every keyword into the same template.

  1. 01 SERVICE BUSINESS

Map service, sub-service, problem, industry and local intent so each commercial page has a clear job.

    VIEW SEO PERTH
  2. 02 LOCAL / MULTI-LOCATION BUSINESS

Separate service intent from real location intent and avoid creating suburb pages where one service-area page is sufficient.

    READ LOCAL SEO GUIDE
  3. 03 ECOMMERCE

Map head terms to categories/collections, long-tail commercial terms to subcategories/products and informational demand to guides without indexing every filter state.

    READ ECOMMERCE SEO GUIDE
  4. 04 B2B / COMPLEX OFFER

Map solution, industry, use case, role and problem intent around the buying journey so similar pages do not cannibalise each other.

    VIEW SEO PERTH
  5. 05 REDESIGN / MIGRATION

Map existing ranking URLs to future page roles before changing slugs or consolidating content.

  6. 06 CONTENT PROGRAMME

Map informational clusters to the commercial pages they support so editorial traffic has a clear next step.

THE KEYWORD MAPPING FRAMEWORK

DEMAND → INTENT → SERP → CLUSTER → PAGE → ROLE → LINKS → MEASUREMENT.

Creative Agency X uses this sequence so the website architecture follows the customer and live search results rather than keyword volume alone.

01 DEMAND SET

Collect commercial, local, informational, problem, comparison, product and brand-adjacent terms relevant to the actual offer.

WHAT COULD A REAL CUSTOMER SEARCH BEFORE CHOOSING US?
02 SEARCH INTENT

Label whether the searcher wants to buy, compare, find a location, learn, solve a problem or navigate to a known brand.

WHAT JOB IS THE SEARCHER TRYING TO COMPLETE?
03 SERP VALIDATION

Inspect current results to see page types, repeated domains and whether different keywords return substantially the same URLs.

DOES GOOGLE TREAT THESE TERMS AS THE SAME INTENT?
04 CLUSTERING

Group synonyms, modifiers and close variants where one page can satisfy the same search/customer decision.

CAN ONE PAGE ANSWER THIS CLUSTER COMPLETELY?
05 PAGE OWNERSHIP

Assign one primary URL or planned URL to each cluster and identify competing existing pages.

WHICH PAGE SHOULD BE THE PRIMARY DESTINATION?
06 PAGE ROLE / FORMAT

Mark the page as service, solution, category, product, location, comparison, guide or other content type.

WHAT FORMAT MATCHES THE INTENT / SERP?
07 INTERNAL SUPPORT

Map which supporting pages should link toward the commercial destination and where hubs/breadcrumbs belong.

WHICH OTHER PAGES SHOULD REINFORCE THIS PAGE?
08 MEASUREMENT / UPDATE

Track rankings, impressions, clicks, cannibalisation and conversions, then update the map as products/services and SERPs change.

IS THE ASSIGNED PAGE ACTUALLY WINNING THE INTENT?

PAGE ROLE DECISIONS

THE SAME WORD CAN BELONG TO DIFFERENT PAGE TYPES DEPENDING ON THE CUSTOMER JOB.

Use page role to prevent commercial and informational pages from accidentally competing.

PAGE ROLE GOOD FIT WATCH FOR ASK BEFORE YOU BUILD
SERVICE / SOLUTION PAGE Strong commercial intent where the customer is evaluating a service or solution. Splitting synonyms into several near-duplicate pages. DOES THE SERP EXPECT A COMMERCIAL SERVICE PAGE?
LOCATION PAGE Real geographic intent where location/service availability changes the decision. Doorway-style suburb pages with no useful local distinction. WHAT IS ACTUALLY DIFFERENT FOR THIS LOCATION?
CATEGORY / COLLECTION Commercial browsing intent across a group of products/items. Creating categories that contain too few useful products or overlap heavily. DO SEARCHERS WANT A LIST TO CHOOSE FROM?
PRODUCT / DETAIL PAGE Specific model/product/material intent where the customer expects one item. Trying to rank product pages for broad category queries that need choice/comparison. IS THE QUERY ABOUT ONE ITEM OR A FAMILY OF ITEMS?
GUIDE / RESOURCE Informational or comparison intent before the customer is ready for the primary commercial page. Informational pages cannibalising commercial pages through the wrong title/intent. IS THE SEARCHER TRYING TO LEARN OR BUY?

KEYWORD MAPPING PRICING / AUSTRALIA 2026

PRICE THE RESEARCH, SERP VALIDATION, PAGE MAPPING AND IMPLEMENTATION DEPTH — NOT THE NUMBER OF KEYWORDS IN A CSV.

Australian providers rarely publish a universal standalone 'keyword mapping' product. Public 2026 pricing is more often for keyword research/content strategy, SEO audits, consulting and defined project work. The first rows use those published benchmarks; larger mapping/remediation scopes are explicitly labelled planning bands derived from current Australian hourly/project rates.

Creative Agency X planning price = market × 0.60. Example: A$800–2,500 keyword research/content strategy market → A$480–1,500 CAX.

We do not price keyword mapping by raw keyword count alone. Two hundred tightly related phrases may be simpler than forty terms spread across several services, locations and competing page types.

SERP/rank-tracking software and other third-party platforms remain separate external costs if a paid tool is required for ongoing monitoring.

KEYWORD MAPPING CHECKLIST

CHECK THESE TWELVE ITEMS BEFORE YOU CREATE OR REWRITE A PAGE.

The map should make page ownership obvious enough that writers, designers, developers and SEO all build toward the same destination.

01 BUSINESS PRIORITY

Mark the services/products/locations that actually matter commercially before sorting by search volume.

02 INTENT LABEL

Classify buy, compare, local, product, informational, problem and navigational intent.

03 SERP TYPE

Record whether results favour service pages, categories, products, guides, maps or mixed formats.

04 CLUSTER

Group close variants where the same page can satisfy the search/customer decision.

05 PRIMARY URL

Assign one destination URL for every cluster.

06 EXISTING COMPETING URLS

Identify cannibalising pages that need consolidation, retargeting or clearer differentiation.

07 PAGE ROLE

Mark service, location, category, product, comparison, guide or support content.

08 CONTENT GAP

Create a new page only when no existing page can satisfy the intent properly.

09 PRIMARY / SUPPORTING TERMS

Give writers a primary topic plus supporting semantic terms rather than a keyword-stuffing list.

10 INTERNAL LINK ROLE

Map which supporting pages should reinforce the destination.

11 MIGRATION DECISION

For redesigns, note keep, merge, redirect or create so the map becomes part of migration planning.

12 MEASUREMENT

Track whether the mapped page actually earns impressions, rankings and conversions for the assigned cluster.

KEYWORD MAPPING MISTAKES

THE MOST COMMON ERROR IS TREATING EVERY KEYWORD AS A SEPARATE PAGE OPPORTUNITY.

That usually creates thin pages and cannibalisation instead of coverage.

  1. 01 ONE KEYWORD = ONE PAGE

Close synonyms and modifiers often belong to one strong page when intent and SERP overlap.

  2. 02 USING VOLUME WITHOUT SERP INTENT

A high-volume term can still be wrong for your page type or commercial offer.

  3. 03 IGNORING EXISTING RANKING URLS

Creating a new page may split signals when an existing page already owns the demand.

  4. 04 SERVICE + LOCATION EXPLOSION

Do not multiply every service by every suburb unless the local intent and page value justify it.

  5. 05 INFORMATIONAL PAGE TARGETING COMMERCIAL INTENT

A guide can accidentally compete with the service page when title, headings and internal links are not role-aware.

  6. 06 MAPPING FILTER URLS AS INDEX PAGES BY DEFAULT

Ecommerce faceted demand needs controlled architecture, not automatic indexation of every combination.

  7. 07 NEVER UPDATING THE MAP

Products, services, competitors and SERPs change; page ownership should be reviewed as the site evolves.

  8. 08 MAP WITH NO IMPLEMENTATION OWNER

A spreadsheet has no value if content, redirects, internal links and metadata are never changed.

KEYWORD MAPPING ACTION PLAN

TURN THE KEYWORD LIST INTO PAGE OWNERSHIP BEFORE CONTENT PRODUCTION BEGINS.

This is the sequence Creative Agency X uses to make the map executable.

  1. 01 COLLECT BUSINESS + SEARCH DEMAND

Start from products/services/customers, then expand with search data.

  2. 02 LABEL INTENT + REVIEW SERPS

Use live results to validate page type and overlap.

  3. 03 CLUSTER + ASSIGN URLS

Group terms and give each cluster one primary owner.

  4. 04 RESOLVE CANNIBALISATION / GAPS

Merge, retarget, redirect or create pages only where needed.

  5. 05 MAP INTERNAL LINKS + CONTENT BRIEFS

Give writers and developers clear page roles and support relationships.

  6. 06 MEASURE + REFINE

Use impressions, rankings, conversions and SERP changes to update the map over time.

KEYWORD MAPPING / PERTH CONTEXT

PERTH IS A MODIFIER ONLY WHEN LOCATION CHANGES THE CUSTOMER'S INTENT.

Do not attach 'Perth' to every page automatically. Map location based on the real buying model.

LOCAL SERVICES

Service + Perth intent may belong on the main commercial service page when Perth is the actual market.

MULTI-LOCATION

Real branches can justify distinct location ownership, but each page needs useful local differentiation.

WA B2B / NATIONAL

A Perth-based business can target national solution/industry intent without weakening every page with unnecessary local modifiers.

ECOMMERCE

Product/category searches are usually national unless delivery, pickup or local availability materially changes the purchase.

KEYWORD MAPPING FAQ

THE QUESTIONS TO ANSWER BEFORE A KEYWORD BECOMES A PAGE.

The useful output is page ownership, not a bigger keyword list.

01 WHAT IS KEYWORD MAPPING?

Keyword mapping is assigning groups of related search terms and intents to the page that should primarily satisfy them. It connects keyword research to site architecture, content and internal linking.

02 SHOULD EVERY KEYWORD HAVE ITS OWN PAGE?

No. When terms share the same intent and the live SERP shows similar ranking pages, one strong page can usually cover the cluster. Split pages only when intent, audience, offer or expected page type is meaningfully different.

03 HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHETHER TWO KEYWORDS BELONG ON THE SAME PAGE?

We compare search intent, SERP overlap, page type, customer decision and whether one page can answer both completely without becoming unfocused.

04 HOW MUCH DOES KEYWORD MAPPING COST?

There is no universal Australian standalone rate. Current 2026 keyword research/content strategy is publicly priced around A$800–2,500, SEO audits around A$600–3,500 and consulting around A$80–350/hour. A focused small-site map may sit around A$1,000–3,000 market, while ecommerce or migration maps can run several thousand dollars.

05 WHAT IS KEYWORD CANNIBALISATION?

It is when multiple pages compete for substantially the same search intent and make page ownership unclear. The fix may be consolidation, retargeting, internal-link changes, redirects or clearer differentiation.

06 SHOULD PERTH AND SUBURB KEYWORDS ALL HAVE SEPARATE PAGES?

No. Location pages should reflect real customer/location differences. Service-area businesses often need a controlled architecture rather than one near-duplicate page per suburb.

07 HOW OFTEN SHOULD A KEYWORD MAP BE UPDATED?

Review it when services/products change, during redesigns, after major content expansion, or when rankings/SERPs show new intent patterns or cannibalisation.

08 HOW DOES CREATIVE AGENCY X USE THE MAP?

We use it to decide page architecture, content briefs, internal links, SEO migration and measurement so writers, developers and SEO are all reinforcing the same primary destinations.
